Anconcito Youth Health Promoters is a 12-week program open to high-school aged youth in the community, where participants are trained on health education, promotion, and prevention. Upon graduating, the youth join a constantly growing group of health promoters actively volunteering in the community. They work alongside clinic staff, community leaders and FIMRC volunteers, strengthening existing health programs and allowing them to reach more community members.

Through this program, the promoters will be empowered as future leaders in Anconcito, serving as change makers that will identify and advocate for the community’s needs. Through the course they will gain the ability to speak confidently in public, learn interactive teaching methods, and develop practical clinical skills like taking blood pressure and checking blood glucose, which they can translate to their future careers in medicine or use to continue serving the community as adults.

In 2018, we graduated our first class of 40 health promoters, who are already planning and implementing monthly health education fairs throughout the community. Supporting this project will allow us to train new groups of youth in 2019, including t-shirts and certificates at graduation, and to purchase the supplies needed to run health fairs this year and conduct fun activities with the group and FIMRC volunteers.
