FIMRC staff and volunteers have been working with one of the local elementary schools, Escuela Cesar Rohon Sandoval, to provide nutrition charlas, lessons on hand-washing and teeth-brushing, and vision, weight, height, and dental checkups for the children. We would like to ramp up our participation with the school by working with the staff and students to implement a school garden.

This project would teach the children how to build and maintain their own garden, how to make compost and natural fertilizers, and how to use the fruits and vegetables they cultivate. It will also give them an activity during the day in which they can spend time outside, socialize, work in teams, and focus on accomplishing goals. We will also incorporate classroom time to teach about nutrition and the importance of eating a balanced diet. $350 will cover the tools, seeds, educational materials, and other supplies to start this garden and maintain it throughout the school year.
