In La Merced’s remote communities, pregnant women often have difficulty accessing health care due to the distance to or lack of health centers. Project La Merced's program, Portawawa, works on Maternal and Child Health with pregnant women and promotes prenatal and postnatal care. To complement and improve our work, the pregnancy simulator would help mothers to experience the normal and worrisome sensations of pregnancy in real life so that pregnant women could understand when to seek help and know how to prevent the risks. It can also be used to train of health personnel and to demonstrate to families what a pregnant woman experiences.

This donation will specifically help prevent future perinatal deaths in Chanchamayo, as the current mortality rate in this community has risen to are 16.15%. This piece of equipment demonstrates the symptoms and effects of a normal pregnancy in a real way, and therefore, highlights warning signs of an abnormal pregnancy. When mothers and their families are aware of these warning signs, it enables them to seek the necessary help from a health center in the early stages of pregnancy and in doing so reduces the risk to both mother and baby. By creating this awareness and sensitivity to the experiences of a pregnant woman, we also hope to generate an early bond between a baby and its future parents. Additionally, the pregnancy simulator will make parents and families aware of the care that a pregnant woman needs and of the difficulties she may face during pregnancy. It is hoped that this will create a more understanding and caring environment for pregnant women.
