Most families in our communities do not have the resources to purchase essential first aid supplies and have them readily available in their homes. These basic supplies include: Band-Aids, antibiotic cream, hydrogen peroxide, and gauze. With the health center only being open limited times on weekdays, anyone in need of first aid after hours must hire transport to the nearest hospital 20 minutes away, or wait until the health center opens. The director of the health center provides first-aid training to interested community members twice a year through a 3-month course. A simple first aid kit and a training seminar for community health promoters would equip them to handle unexpected situations that arise after hours in the communities until the patient can get to a nearby clinic or hospital. There are 20 neighborhoods in Anconcito, and each neighborhood will have a trained representative who is on call and can provide first aid for their neighbors. We will be giving a first aid kit to a course graduate from each neighborhood, following a practical evaluation. Each kit can be adopted individually for $35.
