HIV rates in Anconcito are among the highest in the Santa Elena province, and have continued to rise in recent years. This problem is compounded by the fact that no formal sexual or reproductive health education is taught in the local schools, and HIV is a taboo and misunderstood topic. Grassroot Soccer is an 8-session course for children ages 12-18 that was developed in Africa and successfully adapted by Peace Corps Volunteers in South America. The curriculum focuses on building basic life skills that help the participants adopt healthy behaviors and live risk-free. Through a series of interactive activities and discussions students gain a tangible understanding of HIV and AIDS and get a chance to practice the skills necessary for sustainable behavior change. Key curricular topics include making healthy decisions, avoiding risks, building support networks, reducing stigma and discrimination, increasing knowledge about testing and treatment, addressing gender issues, and assessing values. $250 will provide the supplies and materials to hold Grassroot Soccer sessions for youth throughout the next year.
