Unlike many places in the United States, high schools in Anconcito do not have after school clubs or sports teams that students can participate in. Private sports clubs exist, but the costs are out of reach for most families in the community. With the success of our boys basketball club, we knew we had to provide the same opportunity to young women in the community.

The FIMRC girls basketball club is place where our players can practice their technique, while also learning about teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work. Our players also participate as volunteers in health promotion activities we hold throughout the year, and they attend monthly education sessions, often held by volunteers, on anything from teenage pregnancy prevention to jewelry making. In July 2018, our team won their first championship, beating out four other girls teams participating in the league. We hope that in the future more young women will become interested in basketball to grow the league even more. We are excited to keep working with these young women in the 2018-2019 season, and a $350 contribution will help the girls cover costs for the tournament sign-up fee, referee payments, and the coach.
