Mental Health has only started to be included as part of national health plans in recent years, with only 8 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean having specific up-to-date mental health laws; Costa Rica published its first National Mental Health Policy in 2012. As such, psychological services are more difficult to find, especially for those who are not included in the healthcare system. Nicaraguan immigrants have often had traumatic life experiences and need help adjusting to daily life in Costa Rica, but do not have access to the resources they need to overcome the challenges they face.

With the increase in patients, there are often over 80 patients that are constantly on the waiting list at Project Alajuelita. Additional funds would allow us to keep this service available full time rather than part time, and reach a greater population that is in need of support.
