The Dominican Republic has an extraordinarily low rate of mothers who practice exclusive breastfeeding with their children. In Restauración, there is only one Gynecologist and there is no ultrasound machine at her private consultation or the hospital. The majority of Haitian women who have no passport or any type of ID and Dominican women with no steady income have to find a way to get their ultrasounds done in Dajabon, many of them never have access to any ultrasounds at all during their entire pregnancy.

To build consciousness and increase the number of mothers who exclusively breastfeed, we launched an educational program for new and expectant mothers in Restauración during the summer of 2018. Local groups of pregnant women and new mothers received orientation on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and other related topics such as prenatal care.

The program was very successful, but it only lasted two months not allowing us to follow up with these women, their pregnancy statuses and breastfeeding techniques. Since we launched it solely in Restauración, we could not reach women from other communities. Fortunately FIMRC staff is now capable to deliver this course again and we also count with the help of INAIPI staff to do so again. We still try our best to keep reaching out to them as help them as much as we can with their prenatal vitamins but the demand is higher than the amount of vitamins that we have.

This project will fund the transportation costs to send to Dajabon the women that need it the most, (the ones that have never had an ultrasound done at all), it will pay the ultrasounds, the purchase of more prenatal vitamins, it will helps us with the cost to send the community nurse to get a certificate in Santo Domingo on breastfeeding promotion so we can finally make the program a sustainable one by having her certified and prepared, and finally but not least will help us with breastfeeding promotion mural by FIMRC.
