The Dominican Republic has an extraordinarily low rate of mothers who practice exclusive breastfeeding with their children. To build consciousness and increase the number of mothers who exclusively breastfeed, we are piloting an educational program for new and expectant mothers in Restauración. Local groups of pregnant women and new mothers will receive orientation on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding and other related topics. FIMRC-DR’s community nurse will complete training to become a certified lactation consultant, which will allow her to provide more robust education and support to new mothers in Restauración. This project will pay for our nurse’s lactation consultant training as well as program materials for the mothers who participate (including a new mom kit).
