Through health campaigns and working with hospital and health posts in the area, we have become very aware of the high levels of anemia and the importance of early detection of low levels of hemoglobin (a possible indicator of anemia). There is a high prevalence of anemia in Peru, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and the elderly with long-term physical and mental consequences. La Merced (where the FIMRC project site is based) and the surrounding areas has an increased risk of anemia due to lack of accessibility to health services.

We would like to purchase equipment to quickly and effectively detect those people at risk of/suffering from anemia so that we can put some preventative measures in place in the areas where the levels are highest. Through detecting anemia levels, it would enable us to implement a longer-term term strategy to reduce anemia and educate communities about what they can do to prevent it.
